🐝 Day 30: Queen Confirmed, Master Builders, and Harvest #2
If there’s one thing this season has taught us, it’s that patience, observation, and a few strategic moves pay off in spades! Today’s yard checks brought us absolute triumph at The Ranch, jaw-dropping craftsmanship at The Bastion, and another heavy stack of frames ready for extraction!

👑 Victory at The Ranch: Another Successful Rescue!
Heading over to The Ranch, our main goal was to answer the big question: Did our transferred queen cell hatch?
When we pulled the frame, we were greeted with calm, content bees—a complete shift from the nervous energy of a queenless hive. Looking closely at the queen cells, they were already in the process of being torn down. One cell was clearly chewed open from the side—the classic signature of a newly emerged virgin queen eliminating her unhatched rivals!
Even better? The worker bees had spent their time polishing up the center brood frames until the cells glistened, and right in the middle of those clean cells, we spotted tiny, upright eggs! She is mated, back in the building, and officially laying. The Ranch is officially back on track!
🎓 Bee School: The Queen Emergence & Mating Timeline
How did we go from transferring a capped cell to seeing fresh eggs in just a couple of weeks? Here is how the royal timeline plays out inside the hive:
Days 1–16: From a tiny egg to a pupa sealed inside a wax cell, it takes 16 days for a queen to fully develop.
Days 17–19: After emerging (chewing out of her cell cap), the fresh "virgin queen" spends her first few days inside the hive hardening her exoskeleton, feeding on royal jelly, and getting her bearings.
Days 20–24: She takes her initial orientation flights around the yard, followed by her crucial nuptial mating flights high in the air.
Days 25–28: Once fully mated, her abdomen swells, she returns to the hive, and within a few days, she lays her very first eggs in freshly scrubbed, polished cells!
💪 The Bastion: Our "Big Guns" Deliver Again
After checking on The Ranch, we pulled frames from The Bastion to see how our "Special Projects Team" was coming along with those foundationless cassette frames transferred from The Citadel.
Calling them our "Big Guns" is an understatement! In just a short period of time, they drew out pristine, snow-white virgin comb straight into those circular rings. They took a project that had completely stalled out in another hive and turned it into picture-perfect comb honey!
🍯 Harvesting Harvest #2!
To round out an incredible day in the yard, we pulled those finished foundationless comb frames along with 6 heavy, fully capped honey frames out of The Vault!
Some of these pristine foundationless frames were set aside for cut comb, while other sections with wonky ladder comb were carved off for gourmet chunk honey jars. Combined with the heavy frames from The Vault, our second major harvest of the 2026 season is officially lined up on the counter, ready for the extractor!
