Day 35: The Buzz-Mail Bag — Emergency Triage in the Rain (and the Rescue of Queen Ethel)
If you’ve been following our field notes, you know we’ve had our eye on The Chalet and its resident matriarch, Queen Ethel. She has been sitting on a performance plateau for weeks, refusing to draw out comb or expand her brood nest. Well, this weekend, a slow-burning problem turned into a full-blown high-stakes rescue mission.

🐝 The Yellowjacket Raid
Late August in Wisconsin brings the dark side of autumn beekeeping: yellowjackets. As wild flowers fade, invader wasps turn into ruthless, predatory raiders. They scout out weak, low-population hives, overpower the guard force, and steal every drop of honey and brood they can get their mandibles on.
On Saturday, my nephew Lucien and his friend Lupe came out to the yard for their very first hands-on beekeeping lesson. We suited up, walked out to the hives—and immediately stepped into an active warzone as the sky began to pour rain.
Yellowjackets had completely overrun The Chalet.
Inside, the scene was grim. The box was empty of resources, most of the colony's workforce was gone, and there was Ms. Queen Ethel—wandering aimlessly across desolate, empty comb, completely stripped of her brood and her guards.
🛡️ Executing "Operation Rescue Ethel"
You don't always get sunny days and perfect virgin comb in beekeeping. Sometimes, stewardship means stepping up to do emergency triage in a downpour.
Lucien, Lupe, and I went straight into high-gear action:
The Downsize: We pulled Ethel and her handful of surviving loyalists off those massive, drafty frames and compressed them directly into a tiny, warm 5-frame Nuc box.
Immediate Calories: A tiny cluster trapped in heat-loss mode will starve in hours. We gave them emergency carbohydrates immediately to get their core temperatures and energy back up.
Locking the Fortress: We restricted the nuc's entrance down to a single-bee gap so the tiny guard force only had a tiny doorway to defend.
Counter-Attack: We set up heavy-duty yellowjacket traps away from the hives to draw the main swarm of raiders clear out of the yard.
👑 The Comeback Arc Begins
By Sunday morning, the mood in the nuc had completely shifted. Peeking under the lid, we found Ethel anchored right in the snug, warm heart of her remaining cluster. No more aimless wandering—the bees were tightly huddled around their queen, locked into survival mode, and fuel-charging on fresh syrup.
To complete the rescue, we are introducing a "crib-mate" frame of capped brood and gentle nurse bees borrowed from one of our powerhouse hives, along with a heavy frame of capped honey to act as a thermal wall for cold nights.
Beekeeping isn't just about harvesting honey; it's about protecting the life inside the box when the odds stack up against them. Lucien and Lupe got a wild first lesson in hive defense, and Queen Ethel officially has her second chance at a comeback! 🐝✨
Have you ever had to pull off a desperate hive rescue?
